What is the best metal album?

Hello everyone !

In this article I will review the main metal albums that have strucked and influenced me as a musician of such an exciting kind of music !

A little metalcore classic, a very fashionable style at the time.

“Pull harder on the strings of your martyr”, this song became the reference of the band at the time. They used to play it at the end of all their shows. I don't know if this song is still as famous today.

Still, the riffs, the melodies, the screamed and clean vocals got me hooked. I spent a lot of time learning my favorite songs on guitar and practicing the vocals.

Pure pleasure! Even years later 🙂

Afterwards, this band evolved towards more sophisticated music, especially with the album Shogun which is a good quality album but less catchy than Ascendency in my opinion.

After this album, I didn't like the lead vocals at all so I am not interested in their music anymore.

Yes it’s true, the main melodies and riffs were (too) largely inspired by other artists. An annoying habit of Dream Theater as everyone knows :/

So why do I mention this record here?

Because starting from these melodies, they created progressive pieces of more than 10 minutes with rhythm breaks, changes of measures, heavy riffs which follow very dark ambiances plus beautiful guitar and synthesizers solos which come together very well !

And it’s the progressive metal and not the progressive rock side that comes out in this record. Everything remains dark from start to finish.
The general sound, the guitars in particular, very heavy and worked, is very pleasant to the ears.

Even today, I think this record still sounds great!

Message to Seb: By the way, I managed to play the solo of As I am, you owe me a beer! 😉

My favorite metal album, my number 1.

I think it’s the only record that I was able to listen to almost every day for several years with just as much pleasure.

What to say ? Shagrath spits fire, the guitars are fiercely malicious, the drums are as violent as varied, ICS Vortex with his luminous voice creates a shocking contrast with the other musicians and the keyboards and the symphonic orchestra add some unique colors to the whole.

I love all the pieces on this record, right up to the introduction and the finale where the symphony orchestra paints feelings that we want to make last.

A great personal musical influence.

Already mentioned in the best metal guitarists post, this record is in my personal top 3.

Here too, all the songs are good, we find a sharp voice and guitar sound, fast rhythms and completely crazy guitar and keyboard melodies !

I learned to play almost all the pieces on this excellent record!

This is the record that made me love Gojira.

It took me a little time to penetrate this rather mysterious universe. Everything sounds huge in this record, we slowly navigate the space between the planets...

I always admire Mario Duplantier's drums parts on this record. They are incredible !

Regarding guitars, it was this band that trained my right hand to a more death metal style !

Not a very bad record in my opinion ;(

I am joking !
I've been listening to this record every morning for months  ! I'm so fan of it!

All the songs are good, the riffs and melodies excellent, Peter Tagtgren's voice is crazy.

-> Besides, if you want to sing with a death voice I recommend to practice the song Weed out the weak 😉

I'm not a huge fan of their other records but I found Awakened truly excellent!

Partly because I feel that they mastered their metalcore style better in terms of writing their songs than in the past.

A very good metalcore record !

Ok it's not really an album. I put it on the list because this concert contains everything I love about the first three Slipknot albums.

And the songs are even better in this live than in the albums !

A good death metal album from Poland. I also recommend their live shows !

And finally, a very beautiful black metal record ! Especially the last song Mighty Ravendark.
